About Andy and Laurie

Who are Andy and Laurie?

We are two Australians now in our 60s who love travelling and adventure.  We travel as much as we can by bicycle, but Australia and many other countries are big places so now and again we travel by car, train or plane.   We live in Alice Springs in the heart of Australia, so we have the opportunity to travel to some very beautiful and remote locations.

Cycling

Our longest cycle tour was exactly 1 year long and started in Japan and finished in Spain. On this journey we have cycled through Japan, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria, Hungary, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France and finished in Spain.

We ride Surly Ogres which are a sturdy 29″ mountain/touring bike. They can accommodate a wide range of tyres ensuring we can set up for all types of conditions. Early on Laurie has used a bob trailer which was great for taking camping equipment. Now we pretty much use a mix of panniers and bike packing bags. We still take camping gear, but it has become smaller and lighter.

Being able to camp on our adventures gives us lots of flexibilty and ensures we are able to experience much more at our own pace.  It allowed us to just ride where ever we chose without having to fit to an intinerary and has allowed us to get to many out of the way places.  Accommodation in coutries like Japan requires pre-booking a considerable time in advance, which is really not our style.

4WD Adventures

We own an older Landrover Discovery 2 which we use for travelling in remote outback Australia. In recent times we have travelled to some great places in Western Australia including Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungles), across the Gunbarrel Highway, down the WA coast and across the Nullabour to South Australia.
